ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
Whelchel
Minister of Missions
English for Speakers of Other Language

Adult students from about 20 nationalities meet at Dunwoody Baptist Church each Thursday morning and evening during the school year to learn English and to experience American culture, including Christian life.

Both morning and evening ESOL schools offer beginner, intermediate and advanced classes and accent reduction plus TOEFL. The Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) assesses the English proficiency of people whose native language is other than English. A computer exam given year round, the TOEFL is required for students pursuing undergraduate or graduate study in the US or English speaking institutions in other countries. The TOEFL has 4 sections: (1) listening comprehension, (2) speaking proficiency, (3) reading comprehension and (4) writing proficiency. (NOTE: Feedback from former DBC LM/ESOL students indicates a successful TOEFL score has made them more competitive in the English speaking job market when they return to their own country.)

The evening school also offers (T.A.L.K.) TOASTMASTERS for ESOL students. Morning classes meet 9:30 am to 12:00 pm and evening classes meet from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm each Thursday according to the DeKalb school calendar. Bible study is offered after morning classes. The cost for students is $40.00 for one school year September 7th to May 17. There will also be a small fee for TOASTMASTERS.

Other activities are offered students such as trips to the western art Booth Museum in Cartersville, to Plains to hear President Carter teach the Sunday school lesson, and other options.

Classes are sponsored by the church with volunteer staff from this and other churches.  Volunteers are needed for teaching, hospitality/food set-up, basic administrative support, extra helpers in the classrooms, etc.

Classes meet in D building which is on the north end of our campus.
