Parent/Child Dedication
"Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from Him." Psalm 127:3

The Parent/Child Dedication ceremony at DBC is a commitment for parents. It is recognition of your solemn responsibility to raise your child in a Christian home and a church where he or she may come to know Jesus Christ as his or her personal Savior. This ceremony is not infant baptism. We do not offer baptism prior to a person’s choosing to believe in Christ.

What Baby Dedication is NOT

  • Baptism
  • A guarantee that your children will never have problems
  • A rite that gives a child a special standing before God.

What Baby Dedication IS

  •  A chance for parents to publicly commit to raise their child in a way that honors God
  • An opportunity to seek support from DBC as a whole, to raise their children in the faith community
  • A time for parents to draw together in making that commitment

Parent/Child Dedication Seminar

Prior to participating in a Parent/Child Dedication Sunday, there is a Seminar class during the 9:45 am hour. All parents must attend. There are several aspects that are valuable as you seek to dedicate your child:

  • You find out the details of what goes on that actual dedication day.
  • You hear from Crystal Burt, our Preschool Director, and Brenda Russell, our Children’s Minister.
  • You will formulate your one-sentence blessing that will be read on your child's dedication day.

Upcoming Seminar Dates 2008

  • May 18
  • June 22
  • August 24
  • October 19

All Seminars will meet in the Small Dining Room, upper level of G Building.

Child/Parent Dedication Registration Form

What if I am unable to attend the dedication class? Can just one parent attend?
The class is a required part of the dedication process for each parent desiring to dedicate his or her child. If you are unable to attend the class, please call the Preschool Ministry office and inquire about future parent/child dedication class dates.

Can single parents dedicate their babies?
Absolutely!

Who should we invite to the dedication service?
The parent/child dedication is a very special time, so be sure to invite your family and friends. There is no limit on the number of guests you may invite. Please notify us of the number that will be attending as we will reserve seating for everyone.

Do I have to be a member of Dunwoody Baptist Church to dedicate my child?
No. But because of the great importance of this dedication process, we require all participants to be followers of Christ and be active attendees in the life of Dunwoody Baptist Church.

SCRIPTURES FOR PARENTS

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Deuteronomy 11:18-21 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land that the LORD swore to give your forefathers, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.

Deuteronomy 12:28 Be careful to obey all these regulations I am giving you, so that it may always go well with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is good and right in the eyes of the LORD your God.

Proverbs 22:6 Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.

Matthew 18:4-6 “Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. "And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.”
