Drama: So You Think You Wanna Act?

Drama Courses

So you’re interested in drama/acting? Or you just want to find out what it’s all about? This class is where you want to be. Students will learn about theatre history and lore, stagecraft (you gotta come to find out what that means), the audition process, improvisation, theater games, and more to help one decide if theater or acting is for them. Best of all, as students are learning, they will be working on an original play that will be performed at the end of the 8-week & 12-week course for family and friends!!!

Class Information:

This is an 8-week & 12-week course, with the 1st course being an 8-week course starting September 17th, 2020 thru November 5th, 2020, and the 2nd course is a 12-week course starting January 7th, 2021 thru April 1st, 2021. Each drama course serves students 3rd grade through 6th grade and will meet once a week on Thursday at 4pm - 6pm on the children's level of the D-building (Chapel) on the first floor. Please know that a mask is required to enter any DSA/DBC buildings and only DBC/DSA Staff are allowed on the children's floor of the D-building (Chapel). Therefore, your child will be brought up to the main hallway for pick-up.

Each course is designed to teach the following:

  • The vocabulary of theatre (stage directions, slang, etc.)
  • Theatre History
  • Presentation (projection/diction)
  • Auditioning
  • Improvisation
  • Memorization

In addition, at the end of each 8-week & 12-week course, the students will perform an original play on the last day of class. The roles, length, and complexity of the play will be determined by the student's development, desire, and ability during the course. In order to create value for the students, parents, family, and/or friends, the performance play will be at least 20 minutes in duration!!!

Meet our Instructor

Rob Britt

Rob has been working with children, youth, and adults for 20 years at Dunwoody Baptist Church in the field of drama.  He has been one of the primary leaders of the KidsPraise Service and Arts team for 3rd - 5th graders, which puts on 2 big productions each calendar year. One of the two productions is an original piece written by him. Rob is the writer/producer/director for the Worship Center drama productions for DBC’s annual Vacation Bible School going back 12 years.  He is also a long-time member of the DBC adult drama team where he has written and performed in both short-form sketches as well as longer productions.

In 2014, he felt a call to “quit his day job” and pursue writing as a career.  This process is still ongoing and there have been many blessings along the way.  Six of his sketches have been published in Christmas and Easter themed drama books published by Carpenter’s Son Publishing in 2015-2016. He has written plays bought and performed by Freedom Academy, Knoxville Tennessee.  He wrote all the original dramas for the “Heroes of History” VBS curriculum based on the “Max & Liz” books by Jenny Cote.  In 2015, Onstage Atlanta chose his Christmas sketch “Shelf on an Elf” to be performed by their professional theater company as part of their “Merry Little Holiday Shorts” series.

Rob enjoys working with children and youth, and combining that with his love of drama is one of his life’s greatest joys.  His wife, Lyndy and 16yr son, Adam ARE Rob’s greatest joys and they support his theatrical endeavors to the fullest.  Adam is involved in drama at John’s Creek High School as both an actor and sound engineer.  Lyndy is a behind-the-scenes person who uses her sewing and crafting skills to help with costumes and props.
