Easter Sunday - THE ROAD MARKED BY HOPE
by Jimmy Carter
Senior Pastor
John 20:11–18 Mary is standing outside the tomb…weeping.
From her perspective, everything is over. Jesus is dead. Her future hope is gone. And now His body is missing.
“They have taken the Lord…” — she assumes the worst.
Isn’t that what we do? When life doesn’t go as hoped, we connect dots that aren’t there. We fill gaps with fear. We interpret silence as absence.
She draws a conclusion before she has the full picture.
And yet—Jesus is standing right in front of her. Alive. Present. Victorious. But she doesn’t recognize Him, because grief has shaped her expectations.
Until He says her name: “Mary.”
Hope is not found in better circumstances, but in a Person who knows your name.
Even when we misread the moment, God’s grace has the final word. Death does not win. Despair does not define the story.
Because the road marked by hope is not a road free from grief— It’s a road where grace gets the final word and leads us home.
PRAYER OF RESPONSE
Father, we confess how quickly we jump to conclusions. When life doesn’t go the way we hoped, we assume the
worst. Forgive us.
Jesus, thank You that even when we cannot see clearly, You are present, alive, and working.
Call us by name again. Open our eyes to recognize You in the middle of our grief.
Teach us to trust that Your grace has the final word, and that You are leading us home.
Amen.
